Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa

Background check question

I currently live in Iowa. I got into some legal trouble a couple of years ago in New York. I was charged with Grand Larceny 3rd. The charge was pled down to Petit Larceny. I successfully completed one year of interim probation, at which time the charge was reduced to a disorderly conduct. My question is, what does a prospective employer see when they conduct a background check? On an application, do I have to say that I was convicted of a misdemeanor?

Re: Background check question

The answer to that is to do your own background check. Obtain your records from New York and see what they say. Unless you're trying to work in a place where you deal with kids, work in law enforcement, teach or are bonded this is likely all they'll see. Most civilian access to the FBIs NCIC system is prohibited.

Unless you want to lie on a job application, you're going to have to admit to it, because if you do not and it subsequently turns up you'll be fired so fast it'll make your head spin.

You may want to contact an attorney in New York and find out whether your charges can be expunged.
