Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa

Not sure if this is the right catagory, but help please.

I own and operate a farmer's market in NC Iowa A deputy sheriff came to my business and called me into the inside area of my business as I was outside.

Right behind him were several vehicles with prior vendors and other people.

I was informed by the deputy that these people had items in my store area that they wished to have returned. I told the deputy that I had nothing to return to those people, and was informed if I just ''handed over their stuff'' it would diffuse the situation. I was then informed by the deputy that these people could ransack my store looking for their items.

I have several other vendors and consigners that have items in my store.

Can these people just come into my business to look for items they say are there? Can the deputy just allow them access? They had no proof that any items of theirs were there to begin with.

I have proof that any items they did have there were returned to them. There were more than 12 people going through my store taking what they wanted.

My cash box was opened and relieved of all bills in the top area, over $70, while I was occupied with the deputy.

What are my rights and what are my vendors’ rights pertaining to monies missing from there?

Any advice is appreciated.

I suggest you file a theft report and in the future keep your eye on the money.

If these people were consignors they have the absolute right to remove their property. The deputy was there to keep the peace.

I have the distinct feeling that there is more to this story.
