Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa

I was charged with 3rd degree felony theft charge in 2008 in IL but I completed a defferred judgement and had the charge expunged. Today I was given a ticket and court summons for 5th degree misdemeanor for shoplifting in Iowa. How does the previous expunged record affect this charge? can I get this expunged as well, since it is in a different state? also I was told a simple misdemeanor does show on your criminal history, in the case I have to plead guilty, because is have a degree in the helping field and a conviction would hurt my future...of course I known I should have thought of this before allowing myself to be in the situation...

In order to properly assess the effect of an Illinois expungement on criminal proceedings here in Iowa you will need to talk to an attorney who is licensed in both states, I think. Iowa does not have expungement.

The Iowa courts will likely be aware of the prior IL charge and resolution. The prior felony is going to make you ineligible for a deferred judgment in Iowa. Theft 5th is a simple misdemeanor in Iowa so the penalties are not too severe.
