Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa

Counter Surveillance

I would like to know if it is illegal to operate a buisness in which its services (Counter Surveillance) are to de-bug telephones, rooms, computers, find hidden camera's,ect. for the public, or even state or govt agencies in the states Iowa,South Dakota, and Nebraka. And last is it illegal to own the equiptment that would perform the service mentioned above in any of the three states mentioned. Thanks for your help.

Re: Counter Surveillance

I cannot see any legal objection to what you ask. Understand that recording phone conversations where only one party knows they are being recorded is illegal in many places, and that if the secret recording devices (microphones, tv cameras, etc) are installed with the permission of the owner or the lessor of the premises or as part of a legitimate law enforcement investigation they are someone else's property and you could run into hassles exposing and/or removing them, particularly if they have been installed as part of a loss prevention program or a criminal investigation. I believe there is no harm in people knowing they are being watched/listened to.
