Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa

DEPOSITION: My father has never seen the depositions that is suppose to have evidence against him. Does he have to ask for copies of these ? Is it not the responsibility of the lawyer to show him these documents. And if so does he ask his lawyer for these? Or who does he ask for them . This upsets me that he has not seen these documents. How can he truly defend himself if he does not know what his accusers have accused him of ?. Thank You
