Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa

hotel theft

my daughter (20) stayed at a Marriott Hotel in Iowa. Her wallet was stolen out of her room. The maid admitted to cleaning her room that day but didnt see the wallet. My daughter, in a hurry, left it on the bed in plain site. Police report taken and after doing a background on the housekeeper found she has been arrested 3 times. Dont know at this point for what but she has 2 felony arrests and a aggrevated mis. she is on probation. My daughter items were located the next day down the street in a plastic bag. No wallet, just everything in it but the money. The police dept sent the items back without doing a print check. They have the housekeepers prints on file from priors so I have sent the items back in the same undisturbed package that they sent them to us in so they can run prints. Even if there isnt any printed pulled to try to match to the housekeeper, what are my rights. I feel there is negligence on the hotel for hiring her, not properly screening and/or supervising. When asked they advised me that they do background checks on all employees and only the housekeeping is allowed to enter the rooms. The supervisor for the housekeeper happens to be her sister as well. What can I do? she lost over $150 cash

Re: hotel theft

As a practical matter there's little you can do about it. The amount of money is not large and there's no real proof that this person did anything. You could sue the hotel for the $150, but it probably would cost you far more than you would recover.
