are there any loopholes allowing felons to become lawyers?

Not in Iowa. A person has to pass a character and fitness determination and with any sort of a significant criminal record it is difficult to get permission to sit for the bar exam. There are some lawyers who became felons after becoming lawyers but it is mostly for DUI-3rd offense and they are very few in number.
