Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa
Why would a man charged with manslaughter plead guilty to a lesser charge, then just before sentencing, announce he wants to withdraw his plea?
This is happening in Des Moines, IA

That's something you'd have to take up with that particular fellow. There's no accounting for human intelligence.

It is very difficult to withdraw a guilty plea. To do so, a defendant must file a motion in arrest of judgment and claim that something improper happened in the entry of his guilty plea. It is very rare that such a motion is ever granted. As part of the motion and the hearing on the motion, the reasons for wanting to withdraw the plea must be stated.
