Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa

while plowing snow my friend was charged with destructing property (grass on a lawn) the cops searched his truck and found small amount of marijuana. Got a warrant and found unlabeled pills. The original charge for the property isn't scheduled for court until August, but they want to go forward with the other 2 charges now. Wouldn't he have to go to court on original charge before the other 2 can be tried?
