Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa

The public defenders for our son told us we could not appeal his sentencing as we would have not legal grounds to do so. That was untrue. We have appealed based on ineffective legal counsel. Also, the attorney in charge of the public defenders office, who assisted our son's primary attorney, had the red, blotchy face (broken blood capillaries) of an alcholic. Both my husband and I, indepdendent of one another smelled hard liquor on his breath in the morning during our son's trial. Was it improper from a legal standpoint to tell us that we did not have grounds for an appeal when (we are both college and beyond educated) to allow us to figure it out on our own?

No, as it's a matter of opinion.
