Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa

Questions about my case

My friend and I were at a store, and we got caught for shoplifting. The thing is I got scared and threw my stuff away but they caught her and the things she took. They asked to look in my purse, I said sure. There was nothing in there that I took from the store. They called the cops, and I got charged with 5th degree theft. What do I do when it comes to court time? I didn't take anything from the store, but I don't really know what to say to the judge. What should I say..or what is going to happen..?

Re: Questions about my case

You don't actually have to remove the merchandise from the store to be charged with theft. Theft 5th is a simple misdemeanor. If you have no previous record I suggest you ask for a deferred judgment. However, a guilty plea could bar you from public employment so if you have any doubt about this I suggest you contact a competent criminal defense attorney
