Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa
I am going to be staying in Iowa this summer and I would like clarification on a law that is unclear. I am currently 18 years old and own a handgun - purchased in Maine through a private seller. According to http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/iowa.pdf and many other websites, you must be 21 to possess a handgun in Iowa. However, I read the actual text of Iowa Code 724.22, and it seems the law only states it is illegal for someone who "sells, loans, gives, or makes available a pistol." So, as I already own my handgun, would I be allowed to bring it with me to Iowa? And, if so, would my concealed carry permit also be valid to use?

There isn't a lot of law on the subject. 724.22 seems to be clear on the possession of handguns by minors, in particular reading 724.22(5) which requires parental supervision if a minor possesses a handgun. I would say in this case discretion is the better part of valor. Leave it home unless you will be using it under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian. Also, make sure that the websites you obtain your information from are current and up to date.
