Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa

I was stopped for a traffic violation(improper registration plate lamp in Polk County; Des Moines ,Iowa My Question is can they search my vehicle when everything is legal regarding myself and the car; that I did not own. can they search due to my prior drug convictions. Is this probable cause? I told them I could not give them permission I did not own the vehicle

There was reasonable cause to stop you for an equipment violation. You haven't told me whether the vehicle was impounded or whether a drug dog was summoned or whether any contraband was discovered or whether you were arrested or the nature and extent of the search. The ownership of the car is not relevant as you were in possession and control of the vehicle. These are all important questions that you ought to discuss with your attorney. If no charges resulted out of the search, then you have nothing to complain of.
