Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa
Theft 5th degree-
I live in Iowa and I was charged with shoplifting ($5.45) of food items from a grocery store. This is my first offense and I have no criminal background. My court date is set within the next month. I haven't seeked legal advise, and I'm wondering if it's worth my time. I'm afraid that the judge will not be in my favor if I lawyer everything up. I know what I did was unlawful, but I don't want this simple misdemeanor to ruin the rest of the my life and career. Is there even a chance to have deferred judgement for my situtation so I can show the judge that I'm am a good person through community service, probation, and fines. I believe my future plans and career goals are going to completely change if I am marked with a record for the rest of my life.
