Legal Question in Education Law in Iowa
school asking for birth certificate
I'm 18 and recently moved in with my boyfriend. I'm a sr in high school and my dad lives 5 hours away from me. When I enrolled in school I signed all the papers that parents normally sign. Now I'm being asked for my birth certificate to prove I'm 18. They've already seen my license stating I'm 18 and there is no emancipation laws in Iowa, where I live. My father was unable to locate it. In order for me to get it I have to send $30 to Des Moines and get it. But I can't afford it living on my own right now. Is it legal for a school official to ask for a birth certificate to prove age? Please help

Re: school asking for birth certificate
It is legal, and it's one of those things on which you'll have to spend money. You have to have an official copy of your birth certificate for many reasons, so you may as well get it now.
