I take care of my dad who has Alzheimer's. I am his power of attorney. When I can no longer take care of him in his own home & he has to go into a nursing home can they take his house? I've lived with him for 9 years and he signed a quit claim deed 2 years ago & it's notarized, but I didn't get it filed with the state. I live in Iowa.

A grant that is not recorded is ineffectual-particularly here, as it looks like an attempt to evade the long reach of medicaid. There's a five year lookback provision so if he's going into a nursing home and using medicaid any assets may be within reach of medicaid assuming that he passes on and medicaid has paid for his care.
