Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

Adoption

A wealthy family wants to adopt me. I'm over 18 and the way it has been explained to me is like marrying into the family without getting married. Is this really possible? What legal repercussions could there be for me in the future? For instance, a friend of mine suggested that if the parents are in debt when they die, I could be responsible for paying it off along with the biological and other adopted children. Is there a legal way I could make sure they really are who they say they are without them knowing? Also, they are in another country.

Re: Adoption

I'd be very wary of this idea because something sounds very strange, if not fraudulent about it. If something sounds too good to be true it very often is. You would not be responsible for their debts in any event, but you might well find your credit destroyed and your life in tatters.
