Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

Name Change after a Divorce

I am requesting information on behalf of my Father in Law. Regarding my Mother in Lw his ex-wife. My Mother in Law has been married and divorced 3 times. She has just recently divorced husband three and announced to the family that she is taking back the last name of first husband. My father in Law wants to know if there is anything he can legally do about it because he has been remarried for 15 years now. He and his wife are really upset that she is trying to do this. She has already started using the name on several documents including a bank account. They want to know if there is any legal action they can take. Can she do this? All of the children from first marriage are grown and on there own. There are no other children from other marriage. Any help with this matter would be greatly appreicated. Family is in a uproar over this. Thank you for your time regarding this issue.

A person has a right to use any name they wish if they follow the procedure set out in the code. I doubt whether there's anything you can legally do to stop her.
