Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

child support

my husband just rec'd court papers that he owes $20k+ in back child support for a child that he didn't even know about until last year? How can they call it ''back'' when we have never been billed for it before. this just doesn't seem right, if the mother chooses not to get money until 15 years later, the support should start at that point, and there isn't any patnerity test proving, she just listed him on the birth cert. There should be some statute of limitations. what kind of rights do we have? is there a possiblity of getting it lowered, have they taken into account his current obligation for child support and the 2 kids he currently has at home?? We have just filed for bankruptcy last year for excessive medical bills and are just getting back on our feet.

Re: child support

Get used to the idea that he's going to have to do something about it, and the problem's not going to go away any time soon. I'd suggest you hire a lawyer.
