Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

Child support limitations

My son's mom and I were never married.I have heard that because of that, I'm only required to pay support up to his 18th birthday. I have also heard that is wrong, I am obligated 'til he graduates from high school and possibly longer if he goes to college. What is Iowa law on this?

Re: Child support limitations

Your marital status isn't a factor. And it doesn't matter to the child whether his parents were married, he still needs support. You will most likely be required to contribute to your son's support until he graduates high school or reaches age 19, whichever occurs first. You are not required to pay for college unless you and mom contract to it.
