Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa
My child support order has been coming out of my paycheck for 15 years. I got a letter today saying that my child support increased 14 years ago and the state of iowa missed it. So after no prior notice (not 1 letter- nothing) I received a judgement against me for $12,000 & it starts garnishment next week. This will ruin my credit! I have received letters from child support recovery as recently as September proving I am up to date (had to get this proof the refinance my mortgage ). What can I do? I will obviously pay this but I don't want it to hurt my credit because I had no way of knowing. Can they really do this without contacting me before it goes to judgment?

The garnishment is going to put a dent in your credit and there's not much you can do about it if it stands. You're calling it a judgment but it may be a modification of the existing court order. Whether you're entitled to notice is something you'll have to take up with your attorney.
