Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

Co-Guardianship

My daughter-in-law signed over temporary guardianship of my 2 grandchildren 4 years ago, but they have been living with me 5 years. When she wanted them back, we did not go to court, but the judge ruled I along with my daughter in law and son, had CO-GUARDIANSHIP of them until Sept 1st. The papers say if either party doesnt feel it should be terminated, to file a request for hearing. My question is this:do we have a chance to extend that guardianship? Everything they said they were doing to get the kids back has long since quit. They are back to using alcohol and one of the children even said that mommy and daddy were ''smoking cigarettes that make you act funny'' (they both have a history of marijuana use.) The counseling has stopped, the kids are extremely aggressive, they leave them home alone. In fact, every single witness they had on their side when we were originally going to go to court has now seen that the mother and father DO NOT adequately take care of the children and ''FOOLED US ALL.'' So do we have a fair chance of getting this extended or even back to our custody? What can we do to ensure the children's safety?

Re: Co-Guardianship

The court should have appointed counsel to represent you, --if it hasn't, see about getting counsel appointed who can look after your interests (and those of the children) in this case.
