my grand children live with there father and his girlfriend. there mother was killed in a accident 7 years ago. the father is an alcoholic and uses drugs.he has a record of alcohol use. the problem is he is stealing things now and he got arrested. The boys are 14 and 17. The family wants to take the kids and the girlfriend says she wants to keep them. the father is facing jail time. the girlfriend don't have any record but she uses drugs and drinks too. an attorney has told us to file for guardianship in likeness. what is that mean? what should we do?

You have to file a petition to establish a guardianship in your county. It's not something that one can do without an attorney, I fear.
