Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

Custody over guardianship

My ex girlfriend left our child in the care of her friends. Now an outside party has petitioned for guardianship.

The mother and I were not married and have not gone to court over custody. I cant afford a lawyer so I have been forced to represent myself. I have agreed to family counseling with my daughter due to the 2 yr lack of contact due to mothers actions.

I want to know if during this guardianship I have the ability to fight for physical custody?

I would do this after the therapist feels my daughter is ready to live with me have her come home.
