Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

My daughter is married to an alcoholic. He has tried suicide twice and drinks until he is drunk a couple times a month. He becomes angry with the kids but have not hurt them, he has hurt my daughter.

He has been taking the Grandchildren in the car after he has had a few drinks. The children are 11,9,7,5. My daughter would like to divorce but is afraid that he will get 50% custody of the children.

Are there any laws that would protect the children while they are with their father if she divorces?

If she does not divorce him, and he gets picked up for DWI, is she liable too? They live in Iowa, we live in Minnesota.

If he's driving while under the influence with the kids in the car that's considered child endangerment. If there is a custody and support agreement in place she can move to modify it if there is a danger to the children.
