Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

I am going through a divorce and have custody of my son. My soon to be "ex" and i have not been together for 7 years now and of the 7 he has paid child support 1 year. He currently is not paying again. In our divorce decree, he want to have the right to claim our son as a dependent every year and i get EIC. Is there a better alternative? I feel like this sshouldn't even be allowed, why would you claim a child you never supported? This doesn't even sound legal per IRS terms.. I'm trying to keep this uncontested but this seems bad and unfair to agree to. Any ideas?

You're stuck with whatever the court orders in the custody and support decree. This is a subject you need to take up with the attorney who handles your divorce. When there are children or property involved it's far too risky to tackle this yourself.
