Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa
Divorce and Social Security Benefits
I have read that - in some states - if a person is divorced after more than 12 years of marriage, a person is entitled to be paid a portion of the former mate's social security benefits. Is this true in the state of Iowa and if so, how is it filed for?

Re: Divorce and Social Security Benefits
The answers to your question are contained within the follwoing site. If you were married more than ten years to your former spouse you may be able to collect social security benefits on the record of your former spouse if you have not remarried or if certain other conditions have been met.
My guess is that you would have to file a claim with the social security administration with the appropriate proofs of compliance.
