Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

Where to file a custody petition.

My kids currently live with their dad in Iowa. He refuses to let me see or speak to them. I want to petition for custody and I have to do it pro se because I can't afford an attorney. Where do I need to file the petition, my state of IL or the kids state of IA?

The usual place is the county where the divorce was finalized.
