Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa
A friend of mine fathered a child with a woman that he was never married to. He has paid child support for the entire life of the child. His son's mother now expects him to pay for one third of son's college bills, and is threatening legal action if he does not. The child in question turns 18 six months before he graduates from high school. My friend would like to help with some of the bills, but is currently out of money. What rights does my friend have in this matter. Thank You.

The better question is, what is he facing. There is the possibility that he may be asked to pay a post secondary education subsidy and that is provided for under Iowa Code section 598.21F. If mom initiates an action for the subsidy he should get himself a lawyer.
