Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa
My husband paid childs support for many years. Then he moved in with us - we had possesion of my step son for two years four months with no support from his mother. During the first four months of that we continued to pay her as she would not sign the papers to change it and finally a judge suspended it. Now the child (17yrs) has returned to live with her for his last two years of school. She said she would not go after us for support since we kept him for so long without support. Now several months later she is trying to get support from us. My question: is it worth our time to go before the judge and pay a lawyer to try and get our amount reduced or removed since she is going back on her word? or is it a waste of time and they will make us pay no matter what?

If I understand correctly you had custody of the boy for over two years and did not receive support from Mom. Did you go to court and get an order of support in your favor? If you did not make sure and memorialize this agreement every step of the way you may well have problems in the future. Only the lawyer you select can tell you whether you're wasting your time or not.
