Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

My husband and I pay child support to his ex wife since she has legal custody. Mackenzie who is the child, wants to live with us. Her mother has been in and out of her parents house since Mackenzie was born and spends lots of money at the bar with different men . This is why MacKenzie is stuck with her grouchy grandpa and grandma. Do we need to hire a lawyer to meet Mackenzies request to live with us? Or can she decide at a certain age who she would like to live with? She is at our house every weekend!

The answer is that since mom has custody unless the child is 18 you had better try to get a modification of the custody and support order.
