Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

Hyphenating my childs last name

My son has my maiden name and I have gotten married. His biological father has never been in the picture. Do I need to involve him in a hyphenated last name and do you have to go through legal channels to do this. What would it involve to hypenate and would it just be as easy to change the name all together?
