Legal seperation from spouse

My wife has abandoned my three children and me. To get a lawyer and sue her for divorce, I need a retainer fee of $1,500.00. Prior to this process of obtaining a retainer fee, which in my opinion is steep, I'd simply like to begin the process by legally separating from my wife, so my children and I am free from her new lifestyle. What do you recommend? I specifically want to know the process of separating legally from my wife. Again, I need to begin the process of separating my children and me from my wife's new life and negligible behavior.

There is no such thing as a legal do it yourself separation in Iowa. You must file for dissolution of the marriage, and with children and property involved it is not a job for an amateur.
