Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

What should I do?

I live in Iowa with my boyfriend and my almost 2 year old daughter. When I got pregnant, I lived in MO with my ex and when we split up he had nothing to do with us. He showed up for her birth (because of his mother) and saw her for a few minutes the day after. He hasn't had any contact since. I didn't inform him of my move to Iowa, but he also didn't sign her birth certificate.

I was wondering how this will affect me trying to get him to relinquish his rights so my boyfriend can adopt her when we get married. He is the only dad she knows. We have lived in Iowa for over a year.

Please, don't be mean. He chose to abandon her and I just want what is best for her. Let me know what steps I need to take. Thanks.

Re: What should I do?

You can file a petition to terminate his parental rights under Iowa Code Ch. 600 for abandonment.
