Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

Lump sum child support payment

I would like to offer my ex a lump sum payment for the last six years of child support that is almost $5000 short of what she would get if I just made monthly payments. Realizing the time value of money she would more than make up the difference in a little over a year in the correct account. If she would agree to it, is it possible to have this done through a private legal agreement and get CSRU out of my business forever and have her paid off for good? As long as we both sign the paperwork to have the CS order permanently suspended through the state and it was agreeable to both parties would there be any reason for this not to happen? We would both understand that there are risks that we both assume with this type of agreement.

You'd have to get CSRU to go along with it. Once they're involved you aren't just two people making a deal any more. Get a lawyer.

Don't even think about it! Your ex could take the money, spend it and then ask for child support all over again and she could get it! The child support belongs to the child and cannot be waived. And child support is always subject to change with a change of circumstances. So even an agreement signed by both parties offers you NO protection.
