Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

Mental abuse to grandchildren by daughters boyfriend

Daughter, who had been under psychiatric care, has boyfriend who mentally abuses our grandchildren. Daughter will not stand up to him. He uses punishment as a weapon. Example, every minute they are late-grounded a day; forces them to eat huge amounts of food (says fat is beautiful); walks around in underwear; sleeps exposed (they have seen him). He has threatened us, come to our home 3 times angry & threatening. Is an ex-con (for selling drugs), drives w/o a license. As grandparents what can we do. The grandkids absolutely hate him, and daughter will not listen to reason. Social Services will do nothing. Our daughter lies 100% of the time to us & the kids. He thinks he has all the answers, has no parenting skills, and has the children terrorized. He is also actively working so we can't seen the grandkids. We've raised them the past several years because our daughter was unable to either because of work hours to mental inability.

If DHS doesn't want any part of it then it's likely that you won't be able to prevail, but you can file for custody if you're willing to pay some lawyer up front. I don't think it'll get you anywhere but you're welcome to try.
