Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa
I had my nephew placed in my care through the state after his mom overdosed on heroin. When we took him in we sat her down and said " If you stay clean we will provide for your son. If you continue to use then you will be responible for paying for his care while he is with us. She agreed to pay us $100 a week if she could not stay sober. There is nothing in writing, but she has not stayed clean. He was with us for 23 weeks and is now living with his dad. Does her verbal agreement hold up in court in the state of Iowa? Can I sell some remaining belongings to recoup some money? Is it worth going to small claims?

You have two problems here. Collecting a judgment from an addict is probably a waste of your time. Further, if you received any state services or assistance you've got no business trying to squeeze money out of the child's mother. You can't sell her property because you don't own it.
