At 18, or whatever your state holds is the age of majority.
If you are having difficulties with your child, you should try family therapy OR family mediation, which is slightly different.
Therapy tries to get at the root of the problem psychologically. Mediation tries to identify your needs, the kids' needs and figure out how you two can get along, what sorts of rules you are going to have and how disputes are going to be worked out so you can have a more peaceful household.
Do you really want separation, or do you want a good relationship with your child and not really know what to do to get it? That's part of the decision you need to make for yourself.
