Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa
pro se
Can I have someone like my boyfriend act as my lawyer in court even though he doesn't have a law degree. I'm shy and don't what to say or ask and he has taken some classes and done alot of research for my case and knows the courts better than I do. If so how do I let the judge and the other attorney know he will be acting on my behalf?

I would have to say no, you cannot. If he represented you in court that would be the unauthorized practice of law. There are reasons for this, among them that a non lawyer is not committed to the ethical standards that attorneys are bound by.
