Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa
protection order/abandonment time
Hello, I live in West Des Moines, Iowa and I had a live-in boyfriend for 2 1/2 years that ended in Sept. 2007. He was arrested for public drunkeness and also assaulted a police officer. His drinking had been a problem prior to this that showed up with anger, emotional, verbal and sexual abuse towards me. He was in jail for 4 months and then sent to an inpatient rehab facility. I decided that I would not allow him to come back to the apt after he got out of jail and obtained a protection order in Oct. 2007. At court he agreed to sign off on the apt lease. Because of this order I am not allowed to make contact in any way or is he unless its thru the court system. Now the problem that I have is, it has been 7 months and his cat and his ''things'' are still in my apt. He did come into my apt in Dec. 2007 with 2 police officers, a counselor and himself after he was released from jail waiting to go into rehab. I was not notified of him coming and was shocked that this was allowed. I do not know what he took at that time. My question is can he still try to claim his things and his cat after all of this time? What are my rights?

The answer to your question is yes. You could try to arrange to put his belongings into storage with a relative.
