Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

What rights if any, does paying child support gain a father? I was never married to him and the only court orders are for him to provide medical support and pay child support for one year as she is now 17.

I think the issue is moot because she's soon to be an adult. However if she's going to college she may be able to get post secondary education aid but it has to be determined by the court.
