Son name change

hi I will be getting married in July 07 I have a 6 year old son who hasn't seen or talked to his dad in 4 years or more and he hasn't paid his court ordered child support either in at least that long nor do I know where he is last I heard maybe Arazona..My son and I live in Iowa, I was wanting to change my sons name to match mine when I get remarried well this be possable? I think it would be easier on him and the man i'm marring has been more of a father..well basiclly the only father he knows...and calls him dad. So what do you think and were should I start.

I would start proceedings ot terminate biodad's parental rights under chapter 600 for abandonment, and then maybe your new husband would like to adopt the child? The problem you have is that there is a custody order in place at hte present time, correct?
