Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

My son's dad is getting a DNA test done and if our son is his, he wants to sign the birth certicate. Do I have to approve this? Can he do this without me? And if he signs, what rights is he give? And as for abandonment charges what does that entail?

The father can file a declaration of paternity whether you approve of it or not. As the father his rights will be coequal with yours, subject to any custody and support order that is subsequently entered by the court. Abandonment as a basis for petitioning for termination of parental rights can be addressed under Iowa Code ch. 600A.5 or 600A. 8 which you can review here: http://coolice.legis.state.ia.us/Cool-ICE/default.asp?category=billinfo&service=IowaCode&ga=83
