Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

Spouses Account

With the spouses approval I wrote checks off thier account and had them deposited into our joint account. For bills etc. We are now no longer together and they have threatened me with criminal charges if I do not give them so much money each month on top of my child support. Is it possible to be charged when I had approval and all monies went in to our jount account?

Re: Spouses Account

The issue here would be whether you could be charged with forgery. I do not know who signed the checks, but if it was with the approval of the holder of the account it is not forgery. I would not recommend paying their demands, and if the facts are as you have stated their actions look like extortion-which they might well be prosecuted for. I suggest that if these folks insist on pressing this demand you contact your county attorney's office.
