Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa
Me and my wife both live in US..we just got married in India this month but I just found out that my wife was already married in US last yr to her ex boyfriend who lives in another country, he had just came to US to get married and he left after the wedding.
She did not tell me about her first marriage, she was under pressure and got married and was stupid to get married to me also without ending the previous one. Now she is ready to get a divorce for her first marriage.
My question is that is my marriage valid if they get a divorce? Since my wedding was in India and the first one was in US, I am not sure what the law is?
Should I get registered again in US after the process for their divorce is over?
Please help!
Thanks,
Raj

Unfortunately a person cannot be married to more than one person at a time in the US so I would think that the second marriage is of no effect legally speaking. However you can have a nice ceremony in front of a judge and make it legal once the first marriage is done away with. If she is a resident of Iowa -1 year in the state with an intent to make it her permanent home-she can get an ex parte divorce from the fellow with out him being present. As to the immigration effect of all this I'm not competent to assess this, for that you'd need an immigration attorney.
