Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa
Hi. A year ago, I signed the papers to terminate my rights to my daughter. She now lives with my mother. I deal with depression and anxiety and the DHS here decided that my illness was interfering with my stability as a parent. I don't do drugs or drink. I have been in therapy and see a psychiatrist regularly. My therapist says that she thinks I am doing well, better than I have in a very long time. My question is since my daughter now lives with my mother, can my mom let my daughter come to visit me or stay the weekend? My mom is wondering if she will get in trouble or I will. I have never done anything to hurt my daughter. I see her often, at my mom's house. Also, I am wondering if I can appeal this because I decided to sign the papers and the judge didn't just take my rights away.
Thank you
Julie

Your time to appeal a voluntary termination of parental rights is long past. I think that what Mom needs to do is contact her DHS caseworker and run it past them-you could trigger another removal but this time your mother would be on the hot seat.
