Legal Question in Medical Leave in Iowa

i have 2 questions. my employer forces us to take fmla if we are sick or injured whether we want to or not. is this legal? and when it comes to the hours that the company reports to fmla, they report 40 hours when we've been manditory at least 56 hours a week since last summer (2010). how is it they don't have to report the 56? that doesn't seem fair. we get points and can loose our jobs for those extra 16 hours the company isn't reporting. so if we need to take off for fmla on sat or sunday those hours are only counted as if we worked Monday - Friday. i live in Illinois but work in Iowa.
