Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Iowa

About 1 1/2 years ago, a guy left an bass amp at our house (that didn't even work very well). We tried calling him several times to come and pick it up. After 1 1/2 years of him not coming to pick this up, we went ahead and put money into it to fix it up. Now he calls saying he either wants the amp back or we need to pay him for it. Isn't there some type of abandonment law in Iowa or could we just tell him he owes us for the storage on it? Thanks for your help!

This is what is known as an involuntary bailment. If you actually informed the owner that you no longer wanted to be responsible for his property and he did not retrieve it you are entitled to reasonable storage fees.

However since you had no title to the property you probably should not have invested any money in repairing it.
