Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Iowa

general civil ( small claims)

Im in a small claims suit,for the repayment of a personel loan $5000 plus %, after being served the defendant made me an offer for 4300, I accepted and after some wrangling I received the check and thouht the suit was over, in the mean time the defendant filed a countersuit, today we had a pre trial hearing, i thought we were gonna dismiss it all but the defendant declined. The magistrate sugested I might get an attorney as I live in Oregon and the suit is in Hardin county Iowa. Can I have an attorney in small claims and who can I talk to for some legal advise?
