Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Iowa

My husband and I were going into business with a guy that we trusted, so our name wasn't on anything. Now that he decided to take a different route, we're out $500 paid to rent, $500 paid for deposit on lights, and our car that was exchanged for alcohol (it was for a bar). My husband spent at least 20 hours per week painting and cleaning. Now, we're out everything. We have no proof of anything besides the rent which was paid by check and we have e-mails. He will not reply to us by e-mail or phone now.
